چکیده

We describe a gamma-ray imaging camera (GIC) for active interrogation of explosives being developed by NASAIGSFC and NSWCICarderock. The GIC is based on the Three-dimensional Track Imager (3-DTI) technology developed at GSFC for gamma-ray astrophysics. The 3-DTI, a large volume time-projection chamber, provides accurate, -0.4 mm resolution, 3-D tracking of charged particles. The incident direction of gamma rays, E, > 6 MeV, are reconstructed from the momenta and energies of the electron-positron pair resulting from interactions in the 3-DTI volume. The optimization of the 3-DTI technology for this specific application and the performance of the GIC from laboratory tests is presented.

A Position Sensitive Detector for 1 - 10 MeV Gamma RaysJoel

A position sensitive detector for 9 MeV gamma rays has been developed as part of a contraband detection system for airports. The system images contraband, such as explosives or drugs, in a geometry similar to medical x-ray computed tomography. A point source of gamma rays shines through an unknown object. Transmission projections of the areal density of detected gamma rays are reconstructed int...

Chapter 1 Applications of Luminescence to Fingerprints and Trace Explosives Detection

Fingerprints and trace explosives detection requires great sensitivity, which is provided by luminescence and appropriate physical and chemical treatments. Ninhydrin, 1,2-indanedione and other chemicals react with the amino acids present in the fingerprint residue. The chemically treated samples, on which the prints are to be detected, are excited with the blue lines 476.5 and 488 nm of an Argo...

Comparison between Amperometric and Chemiluminescence methods in detection and dosimetry of cobalt-60 gamma ray emission

Background: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), produced by gamma ray irradiation to watery solution, was used as an analytical parameter for dosimetry of cobalt-60 (60Co) radiation. Materials and Methods: Detection of the produced H2O2 was carried out using two methods: an amperometric biosensor fabricated by immobilization of anthraquinone 2-carboxylic acid modified horseradish peroxidase on glassy car...

Second Research Coordination Meeting: IAEA CRP on “Neutron Based Techniques for the Detection of Illicit Materials and Explosives”, Mumbai, 12-16 November 2007 FAST NEUTRON AND GAMMA-RAY INTERROGATION OF AIR CARGO CONTAINERS

Since 2002 the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has been working with the Australian Customs Service to develop a scanner capable of directly imaging airfreight containers in 1-2 minutes [1-4]. The scanner combines fast neutron and gamma-ray radiography (FNGR) to provide high-resolution images that include information on material composition. By collecting trans...

The effect of fasting on Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging

As a nuclear approach, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a functional imaging technique which is based on the detection of gamma ray pairs emitted by a positron-emitting radionuclide. There are certain limitations to this technique such as normal tissue uptake. Therefore, it has been recommended that patients prepare before scanning. Fasting for a short while before PET imaging is an exampl...
